PHILL almost created history in January 2007 in one of the remarkable World Championship finals ever seen.
The house-husband from County Durham went into the Lakeside event as a 500-1 outside on his debut this year, after coming through the events qualifiers, before going on to reach the final with wins against Darryl Fitton, Martin Atkins, Paul Hanvidge and Niels de Ruiter.
He found himself 6-0 down to Martin Adams in the final, only to claw his way back level at six-all before Adams claimed the final set to deny Nixon the most unlikely comeback in the history of the sport.
The run saw Nixon, who has played locally for 33 years, move into the national spotlight, catapult him up the WDF rankings and see him represent England.
He earned a place in the International Darts League and World Darts Trophy earlier this year, although he was a Preliminary Round loser in both events.
A father of eight and Durham County player, he reached the last 16 at the World Masters last year, losing to Mark Webster, having reached the last 32 in 2005.
