NIELS is another of the young Dutch players who is progressing to the top of the sport, as he bids for his first major title.
After initially beginning playing darts in 1999, he reached the semi-finals at the Welsh Open and Welsh Classic in 2005 as well as the last eight at the International Darts League that year.
His progress had also resulted in a call-up for Holland's World Cup team, where he won the Mens Team title in Australia before returning to make his BDO World Championship debut.
A runner-up to Mark Webster at the 2006 Europe Cup and quarter-finalist in the World Darts Trophy, his major breakthrough came at the World Championship this January.
Niels enjoyed wins against Brian Woods, Simon Whitlock and Gary Robson before losing out 6-4 to Phill Nixon in the semi-finals, an achievement which earned him a place in this event.
He also represented Holland at the World Cup in October, winning the overall Team event to follow his success at the 2006 European Championship.
